BORAX: 115 Years of Cleaning and Fixing Problems

What is Borax?

Good question!  It’s been around for over 115 years and I never heard of it until about 6 months ago.  I came across a homemade recipe for laundry soap and it called for Borax.  So, I went searching for some Borax.  After finding it at a local store, I used it to make the homemade laundry soap I had a recipe for.  It worked great for me.  Now I am finding all kinds uses for it every where I look.

About 4 months ago I ended up in the hospital for a mrsa infection.  I did some internet searching and I found some people said they where using it in there laundry to kill mrsa and scabies.  Some even report they bath in it to help control mrsa and scabies outbreaks.  We did a blog about scabies home remedies including Borax at:

But what is it?  According to, Borax, also known as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. It is usually a white powder consisting of soft colorless crystals that dissolve easily in water.  Borax was first discovered in dry lake beds in Tibet and was imported via the Silk Road to Arabia.

Borax first came into common use in the late 19th century when Francis Marion Smith’s Pacific Coast Borax Company began to market and popularize a large variety of applications under the famous 20 Mule Team Borax trademark, named for the method by which borax was originally hauled out of the California and Nevada deserts in large enough quantities to make it cheap and commonly available.  Now it is a brand of Henkel, the name behind Dial Soap.

I have been doing some internet research to see what all the hip is about this Borax.  Its main purpose is an laundry additive, however it seems many people are finding all kinds of other uses for it.  I thought I would share some of the uses I have found via the internet.

Please be aware that the resources I am sharing are not necessarily approved by any government agencies.  You should research these for yourself.  I am just sharing what I have found.  Many of these are homemade recipes people are trying at home.  Some may be unsafe.  You should use caution if you try any of these ideas.

Can Borax be used to kill ants or roaches?

On Their Borax web site, The Dial Corporation says they cannot recommend Borax to kill ants or roaches. The EPA has not authorized 20 Mule Team as a pesticide.  However many people claim they are using it to Keep roaches, waterbugs, and ants away by sprinkling a combination of equal parts all-natural borax and sugar.  Yes, I did say sugar.  I could not believe it myself.  Here is a video I found on that explains why: (It plays at the end of the video).  Very interesting. has an article on this topic called:  25 Household Uses For Borax.  Check it out.  It has some other pretty good ideas for Borax.  If the video above is not showing up for you try reloading your page.

Will Borax Kill Scabies?

According to a post at  By Deb Powers: One common home remedy for treating scabies is to soak in a bathtub of water to which 1 to 2 cups of borax and 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide have been added. The treatment is repeated daily until the condition subsides. While there is no medical proof that the borax scabies treatment works, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence to support its use.

One reason that scabies is so difficult to cure is that the insects can survive for up to 72 hours on bedding and furniture. To prevent reinfection with scabies, wash all bedding and clothing in hot water with borax. Sprinkle borax liberally on carpets, mattresses and furniture and leave for at least 1 hour before vacuuming.

Borax is poisonous if taken internally. If you choose to use borax to treat scabies, be sure to keep it away from children, pets and any food preparation surfaces. It can also irritate the eyes and mucous membranes.

Some other home remedies I have read that seam worth researching for scabies are: Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur Soap, and MSM Supplements.

According to, Borax, given the E number E285, is also used as a food additive in some countries but is banned in the United States. As a consequence, certain foods, such as caviar, produced for sale in the U.S. contain higher levels of salt to assist preservation.  Its use as a cooking ingredient is to add a firm rubbery texture to the food, or as a preservative. In oriental cooking it is mostly used for its texturing properties. In Asia, Borax (Chinese: 硼砂; pinyin: péng shā) or (Chinese: 月石; pinyin: yuè shí) was found to have been added to some Chinese foods like the hand-pulled noodles lamian and some rice noodles like Shahe fen, Kway Teow, and Chee Cheong Fun recipes.  In Indonesia it is a common, but forbidden, additive to such foods as noodles, bakso (meatballs), and steamed rice. The country’s Directorate of Consumer Protection warns of the risk of liver cancer with high consumption over a period of 5–10 years.

If you’re in need of a awesome looking header for your blog or web site, we found a site called that had a contest a couple years ago asking their readers to help create a gallery of blog header graphics which any designer could use for free and without restrictions whatsoever.  You will find the headers that won and that you can use freely here.

We at time use some of the headers in our blog network.  Such as this one:

Do Not Use or Follow TEXT ADS From Them!  – Hackers!  Publisher’s of Adware!  You should not Join their site, buy their advertising  or click on their text ads.

When you purchase advertising and put your ads on a site or blog you are doing business with them.  When you put those ads on a web site or in a blog with out the permission of the publisher you are stealing from them.  Plan and simple.  That is what did on today. had their text advertisements on the PortalTaxi network without  our permission.  system works by an advertiser placing an ad with Text Enhance .com and then TextEnhance publishs that ads with one of the Text Enhance publishers.  The problem is PortalTaxi is not one of the publishers.  So how did their ads get on  News Network?  It is likely one of our members, a person commenting on a post or themselves placed a code on our site.  It could have been a code added to a post or a comment that would ad the advertising.

We normally would not accuse a platform developer of a shady act like this, that would normally be done by someone using their system.  Most ad platforms like this are legit and would help you out if you have an issue with their system.  We understand that you get bad users on every platform.  We get them on Portal Taxi.  That is why we contact directly via email there at  The thing is never responded back to us directly.  We sent them like 10 emails and only go auto generated email massages back.  That is an obvious sign of someone you do not want to do business with on the internet.  At that point we started to get worried because their automated emails mention what to do to remove the adware and make statements like you have not been hacked.  Obviously this is something they always do when they send out an email like that.  We then did a google search and found a lot of negitive comments all over the web about there hacking and adware practices.  We will share links to some of what we found at the end of this post.

If you’re having this issue on your computer or web site I suggest you go the advertiser and complain.. Charge them for the space like we plan to do.  We tried contacting the advertising platform and that was useless.

We do not know who is and we have never heard of them or done business with them.  We urge that if you are doing business with to Please Stop!  Because if you’re advertisments are showing up on our site without our permission then you also are stealing ad space from us.  You do not have permission to have your ads here.  I am sure your ads are also showing up on other sites like this. / will invoice advertisers we find on our platform that are generated from platform.  We will contact the advertiser directly and bill them for the ad space.  They will be billed a flat advertising rate of $250 for each ad that was place on our site with out’s  permission.  If done want to pay our fee for having your ad here then I suggest you go after for our cost.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car: Stop opposing a law prohibiting companies from renting out recalled cars

Reported by, Cally Houck’s two daughters, Raechel and Jacquie, rented a PT Cruiser from Enterprise Rent-a-Car in 2004. What they didn’t know about their car was it had been recalled for serious safety problems a month earlier, and that Enterprise didn’t fix the car.

Raechel and Jacquie’s rental car caught on fire because of the very issue that prompted the recall. The young women crashed their fiery car into a tractor-trailer, killing them both.

In just a matter of days, Congress is set to consider a new law that would force rental car companies to fix recalled cars, but Enterprise Rent-a-Car is lobbying against it — and hard. Enterprise’s opposition could block the bill, allowing Enterprise to continue to ignore car recalls like the one that killed Cally Houck’s daughters.

Cally Houck has dedicated herself to making sure that rental car companies fix recalled vehicles so no other parent loses her daughters to rental cars that are known to be unsafe. She says it’s critical to stop Enterprise’s opposition now, before they kill the law. Cally started a petition on asking Enterprise Rent-a-Car CEO Andrew Taylor to stop opposing the law to force rental car companies to repair recalled vehicles.

These two young women weren’t the first to die from rental cars under recall, and they weren’t the last, according to a USA Today report this weekend. Despite knowing the risks, companies like Enterprise choose to keep unsafe cars on the road.

When a vehicle is recalled because of safety or performance issues, the government says all vehicles should be fixed immediately. That why car dealerships aren’t allowed to sell new or used cars under recall that haven’t yet been fixed.

For Cally, it’s hard to imagine why rental car companies would be okay with renting cars that they knew to be unsafe. Before her daughters rented the car that killed them, three other customers had rented it from Enterprise after the safety recall.

There is hope — Hertz, a major rental car company, bucked its competitors and is actually supporting this new law. Cally hopes that by calling attention to Hertz’s willingness to protect its customers — and by showing that Enterprise is willing to let customers drive what she calls “ticking time bombs” like the one that killed her daughters — Enterprise will stop opposing this law.
