RSS Feed Information For My Web Site or Blog!

What Is An RSS FEED?

RSS (Rich Site Summary); originally RDF Site Summary; often dubbed Really Simple Syndication, uses a family of standard web feed formats[2] to publish frequently updated information: blog entries, news headlines, audio, video. An RSS document (called “feed”, “web feed”,[3] or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, and metadata, like publishing date and author’s name.

You can syndicate your rss feed right here on PortalTaxi.net

RSS feeds enable publishers to syndicate data automatically. A standard XML file format ensures compatibility with many different machines/programs. RSS feeds also benefit users who want to receive timely updates from favourite websites or to aggregate data from many sites.

Subscribing to a website RSS removes the need for the user to manually check the web site for new content. Instead, their browser constantly monitors the site and informs the user of any updates. The browser can also be commanded to automatically download the new data for the user.

Software termed “RSS reader”, “aggregator”, or “feed reader”, which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based, present RSS feed data to users. Users subscribe to feeds either by entering a feed’s URI into the reader or by clicking on the browser’s feed icon. The RSS reader checks the user’s feeds regularly for new information and can automatically download it, if that function is enabled. The reader also provides a user interface..  Read More >

Why Should your web site have an RSS Feed?

A frequently updated feed can help bring you massive amounts of repeat traffic.  There are lots of tools for promoting your web site or blog via your rss feed.  Feedburner.com, now owned by google is one of the most popular feed tools.  Run your newsletter without the hassles of maintaining a list.  Feedburner does it for you.  If your web site supports rss feeds it will auto update every time you post a new article to your web site or blog.

How To Add An RSS Feed To Your Web Site?  How Can I Display An RSS Feed On My Web Site?

If you use wordpress, add the word “feed” to any page published with blog content and it will give you an rss feed for that page.  If you do not know if your hosting package / web site supports rss feeds ask your hosting provider.  They will be able to answer what rss tools you have in place.  If your hosting platform does not offer the ability to publish a rss feed, I wrote a post here that explains: How To Build Your Own RSS Feeds For Your Web Site

How Do I Display Other Web Sites RSS Feeds On My Web Site?

Remember when you display content from another web site on your own web site, you are copying that web site’s content into your own page. To avoid possible copyright infringement, you should always seek permission if you’d like to display content from another site on your page.

Ask the rss content provider what methods they have for displaying their rss feed content.  You might have to just use their rss link and source it into your web site on your own.  However they might also have hmlt code for their rss feed that might be easier for you to republish the rss feed.  There are many ways for source the rss feed into your site.  If your using wordpress search your plugin page for rss feed syndication and you should be able to find a plugin that will do this for you.  Some site have a widget where all you have to do is add the link to it and it will generate the rss feed.  If you’re not sure if your web site support add others rss feeds to your web site, ask your hosting provider.

How To Make Home Made Laundry Soap

I was watching my local news when they had a special about “ways to save money at home”. They had a topic on how to make home made laundry soap and a bunch of other cleaning products.

I decided I would give the laundry soap a try.  They said you could make enough soap to do your entire laundry for a year for less them $3.00  I spend more then that on one bottle. That sounded great.  So, I gave it a try and made it.  I bought all the items needed from walmart.  But I am sure most supermarket will have it.  It was all in the laundry isle.

Here is what you need to make it:

A 5 gal bucket with a lid, 10 gals water, 1 Fels-Naptha Soap Bar, 1 Cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda and ½ Cup Borax.  You could add some lavender essential oil if you want, but this is not needed.  If so use about 25 drops but not until the water has cooled.

You can use Bars of Zote Soap also.

How to make it.

Take your bar of Fels-Naptha Soap and cut it into the smallest pieces that you can.  The smaller the better.  You could also grate it.  Add the grated soap to a mid size cooking pot about half full of water.  Cook the water and soap on low to med heat until the soap becomes liquid and there are no more pieces left.  It may take a little while to do this.  The smaller your pieces when you start the faster it will turn to liquid.  Stir this continually.

While your bar of soap is melting, fill your 5 gal bucket 1/2 way with hot tap water.  Add the Borax and Washing Soda.  Stir until all power is dissolved.  When your bar of soap is melted add it to the mixture in the bucket.  Stir all ingredients until well mixed.  After mixed fill the bucket the rest of the way up with hot tap water and mix again.  Cover and let the bucket sit over night.  At this point it will not start to look like laundry soap yet, but it will gel as it cools.  The next day it will be really think and need more water.  This makes a total of 10 gals of laundry soap.  There is two different ways you can add the rest of the water.  One, just add five more gals of water to the soap.  You will need two five gal buckets that way.  Or you can keep the soap as is, in the one bucket and pour it into your empty laundry container as needed.  If doing this way, fill your container half with water and half with the soap mixture.  Shake well before each use.

If you try this, please let me know what you think.  If you have other ideas of making it, I would love to hear them.  I hope this idea helps you save a few bucks at home.

BORAX: 115 Years of Cleaning and Fixing Problems

What is Borax?

Good question!  It’s been around for over 115 years and I never heard of it until about 6 months ago.  I came across a homemade recipe for laundry soap and it called for Borax.  So, I went searching for some Borax.  After finding it at a local store, I used it to make the homemade laundry soap I had a recipe for.  It worked great for me.  Now I am finding all kinds uses for it every where I look.

About 4 months ago I ended up in the hospital for a mrsa infection.  I did some internet searching and I found some people said they where using it in there laundry to kill mrsa and scabies.  Some even report they bath in it to help control mrsa and scabies outbreaks.  We did a blog about scabies home remedies including Borax at: http://www.portaltaxi.net/news/2012/04/22/home-remedies-for-scabies/

But what is it?  According to wikipedia.org, Borax, also known as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. It is usually a white powder consisting of soft colorless crystals that dissolve easily in water.  Borax was first discovered in dry lake beds in Tibet and was imported via the Silk Road to Arabia.

Borax first came into common use in the late 19th century when Francis Marion Smith’s Pacific Coast Borax Company began to market and popularize a large variety of applications under the famous 20 Mule Team Borax trademark, named for the method by which borax was originally hauled out of the California and Nevada deserts in large enough quantities to make it cheap and commonly available.  Now it is a brand of Henkel, the name behind Dial Soap.

I have been doing some internet research to see what all the hip is about this Borax.  Its main purpose is an laundry additive, however it seems many people are finding all kinds of other uses for it.  I thought I would share some of the uses I have found via the internet.

Please be aware that the resources I am sharing are not necessarily approved by any government agencies.  You should research these for yourself.  I am just sharing what I have found.  Many of these are homemade recipes people are trying at home.  Some may be unsafe.  You should use caution if you try any of these ideas.

Can Borax be used to kill ants or roaches?

On Their Borax web site, The Dial Corporation says they cannot recommend Borax to kill ants or roaches. The EPA has not authorized 20 Mule Team as a pesticide.  However many people claim they are using it to Keep roaches, waterbugs, and ants away by sprinkling a combination of equal parts all-natural borax and sugar.  Yes, I did say sugar.  I could not believe it myself.  Here is a video I found on diylife.com that explains why: (It plays at the end of the video).  Very interesting.

Diylife.com has an article on this topic called:  25 Household Uses For Borax.  Check it out.  It has some other pretty good ideas for Borax.  If the video above is not showing up for you try reloading your page.

Will Borax Kill Scabies?

According to a post at ehow.com  By Deb Powers: One common home remedy for treating scabies is to soak in a bathtub of water to which 1 to 2 cups of borax and 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide have been added. The treatment is repeated daily until the condition subsides. While there is no medical proof that the borax scabies treatment works, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence to support its use.

One reason that scabies is so difficult to cure is that the insects can survive for up to 72 hours on bedding and furniture. To prevent reinfection with scabies, wash all bedding and clothing in hot water with borax. Sprinkle borax liberally on carpets, mattresses and furniture and leave for at least 1 hour before vacuuming.

Borax is poisonous if taken internally. If you choose to use borax to treat scabies, be sure to keep it away from children, pets and any food preparation surfaces. It can also irritate the eyes and mucous membranes.

Some other home remedies I have read that seam worth researching for scabies are: Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur Soap, and MSM Supplements.

According to wikipedia.org, Borax, given the E number E285, is also used as a food additive in some countries but is banned in the United States. As a consequence, certain foods, such as caviar, produced for sale in the U.S. contain higher levels of salt to assist preservation.  Its use as a cooking ingredient is to add a firm rubbery texture to the food, or as a preservative. In oriental cooking it is mostly used for its texturing properties. In Asia, Borax (Chinese: 硼砂; pinyin: péng shā) or (Chinese: 月石; pinyin: yuè shí) was found to have been added to some Chinese foods like the hand-pulled noodles lamian and some rice noodles like Shahe fen, Kway Teow, and Chee Cheong Fun recipes.  In Indonesia it is a common, but forbidden, additive to such foods as noodles, bakso (meatballs), and steamed rice. The country’s Directorate of Consumer Protection warns of the risk of liver cancer with high consumption over a period of 5–10 years.

Would You Have A Bengal Tiger As A Pet?

A couple in Brakpan, South Africa has 14 dogs and a Bengal Tiger as their house pets.  That’s  right I said a Bengal Tiger.  Ok, are they crazy?  No.. they just really seem to love their little kitty.  Well,  he is not so little any more.  Check out this Youtube video I found of Michael Jamison and Jackie Smit playing with their kitty.  According to the information in the video the couple got him as a nine week old tiger cub and he has been living in their home with them ever since.  Watch the kitty’s entrance in this video.  Just that would be enough to scare the crap out of me.. lol

So what do you think about people who keep wild animals as house pets?  Would you have one or do you think they are making a foolish mistake?  What type of animal would you have?

Iceberg Flips Over As Boat Passes

What would you do if you where in a boat passing an iceberg and all of a sudden that iceberg started to sink and then it flipped over?  Probably have a heart attach, but not youtube user .  They pulled out their camera and started filming.

A catamaran just happen to be passing by a Upsala Glacier on Argentino Lake in Argentina, when a large part of a iceberg broke off and then flipped over.

The youtube user writes: “This Iceberg was “calved” by Argentina’s Uppsala glacier. While we were passing by it with a catamaran, the huge berg lost a part of itself (look at the right side sinking) and then flipped over with a huge roar. In the process of melting this happens all the time, but it is seldom that it is captured on video WHEN it happens…
