Music News: Ten-year-old Sam Levin releases debut single, “I Sure Hope Not”

Prodigy has skills far beyond his years, quickly proving his place in music

At the tender age of 10, Sam Levin has already done what most of us can only dream of – write and record a hit song.

“I Sure Hope Not,” his debut single, is a catchy acoustic pop song with impressive songwriting and production skills far beyond what you’d expect from a child. But the undeniable melody provides an irresistible pull that draws fans in quickly.

Sam’s musical journey began at the age of five, when he saw an electric guitar on the wall at a local music store and said, “I want to do that!”  He started playing guitar, and soon after began taking piano lessons too.  He quickly learned enough to begin performing at local open mic nights near his home.

Three years ago Sam began attending The Lagond Music School in Elmsford, NY where his musical education broadened to include Latin, Funk, Jazz, R&B and more. Now age 10, he currently plays guitar, bass, piano, drums, percussion, and vocals.

Sam’s influences include Jack Johnson, Bill Withers, The Beatles, Herbie Hancock, and it shows. “I Sure Hope Not” has all the lighthearted, playful innocence of Jack Johnson’s best work.

The performance is all the more impressive when you realize that not only did Levin perform the guitar and vocals, but he’s also responsible for the backing guitar, bass, piano, and drums on the track. He also did the recording himself.

The song poses an existential question about Levin’s future – will he grow up to be jaded, greedy, or cruel? It questions the conventional Hollywood stereotype, and asks hard questions that most 10-year-olds have never even considered.

With a debut like this, Levin doesn’t need to worry about what he’s going to be when he grows up. Anyone listening to “I Sure Hope Not” already knows just what the future holds for Sam Levin – a long career in music.
