ILLUMINATING QUEER LIVES THROUGH FILM

For 27 years, Out On Screen has proudly showcased films that illuminate the transformative moments in the lives of queer people – telling stories of the journeys we have taken to find ourselves, each other and our place in the world. Every time we take a seat at the Festival, we are experiencing the difference we are making: creating social change through film, education and dialogue.

We are honoured to celebrate you and to celebrate with you the unique, strong and splendid Vancouver queer communities that make us who we are.

HISTORY

1988 – The first iteration of what we know today as the Vancouver Queer Film Festival was held as a small film festival among friends.

1989 – Out On Screen becomes an official non-profit society and the first Vancouver Gay & Lesbian Film Festival is launched!

1993 – Out On Screen receives its first form of government funding with a Casino License through BC Gaming.

1996 – Out On Screen is one of the first in the world to adopt the more inclusive “queer” title becoming the “Vancouver Queer Film & Video Festival” and in 2006, the “Vancouver Queer Film Festival.”

1998 – The Queer Video Production Scholarships are launched and 36 films are made over the next six years thanks to this video-training program!

2002 – The BC Film Classification Office (FCO) attempts to shut down the Festival’s Opening Gala film “Little Sister’s vs Big Brother” which chronicled the late Jim Deva’s battles with the government over censorship. Fortunately, Out On Screen’s dedicated membership rallied and thwarted this ironic censorship attempt and the show went on!

2004 – Out in Schools is launched as a pilot project with presentations in six high schools in Vancouver and Burnaby. Today, OiS reaches over 60,000 students in schools across BC and beyond!

2006 – REAL Women of Canada launches a smear campaign against the Festival, claiming that only “mad hatters” attend this “waste of taxpayers’ money.” Once again, the membership at Out On Screen rallies against hateful discrimination and the Festival lives on, louder and prouder than before!

2008 – Out On Screen celebrates 20 years in Vancouver and hosts a legendary and risque bathhouse party.

2011 – Celebrate Queer Vancouver engages 68 Canadian artists through film commissions and community art. Out On Screen celebrates by installing Celebrate Queer Vancouver plaques throughout the city to create a legacy of queer visibility.

2012 – Rise Against Homophobia (RAH) youth video contest goes national! Youth from across the country submit their anti-bullying films proving that “Hate is not a Canadian Value.”

2013 – Out On Screen celebrates 25 years of celebrating queer lives!

2014 – In a year of groundbreaking cinema, over 50% of the Festival’s feature programs are helmed by women. Not only that, these directors are Aboriginal, transgender, and women of colour – intersecting identities that are the least common in above-the-line credits.

Toronto Queer West Film Festival 2015

Toronto International Queer West Film Festival – The Queer West Film Festival  is  gaining international reputation for offering the best of independent queer cinema and the opportunity to meet filmmakers and artists, participate in workshops and panel discussions, attend galas and after parties and see unexpected performances. Toronto, Canada.

Toronto Queer West Film Festival 2015

Toronto Queer West Film Festival 2015

The  Toronto Queer arts and Culture Festival won’t be hosting an arts festival in 2015, instead we are  expanding our  annual film festival from an evening screening to a three day event. Each year we receive hundreds of entries that we have to refuse because of time constraints. Increasing the event will allow us to showcase the very best of emerging LGBTQ filmmakers both locally and internationally.

A NEW GENERATION OF QUEER FILM ARTISTS AND FESTIVALS

Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America and one of the most multicultural cities in the world. As one of the main creative hubs in Canada and host of the Toronto International Film Festival (one of the largest and most influential film festivals worldwide), Toronto is home to a great wealth of creative talent. This is strengthened by its three world-class universities and countless film college programs. As North America’s third largest screen-based production center, film makers at every stage of their career have access to a diverse and well-developed filmmaking community along with all the tools they need to develop their work. It also guarantees Toronto’s 35 film festivals (and counting!) with a never-ending stream of emerging talent.

Indeed, Toronto’s film festival circuit is booming, drawing a consistently high volume and variety of talent from around the world. The Toronto queer film scene owes a lot to the success of TIFF, Inside Out and Hot Docs, with the first, in addition to its annual festival, acting as a year-round hub for film discovery and appreciation. Each of Toronto’s festivals responds to a need within a community such as representation, activism or education. Just as the Queer West Arts Collective responded to the need for alternative events outside of Toronto’s traditional gay village, our film festival has grown out of a desire to share films and media that may not have found a home at other festivals.

Social media has allowed us much greater insight into the lives of members of our community around the world. It has also inspired a new wave of film making and queer film makers to broaden the reach of their work. We hope that our film festival, which is still in the early stages of its growth, helps to represent and document the changes and challenges representative to the queer community around the world. This means celebrating universal themes such as discovery of new love and giving voice to those who continue to remain voiceless within our community.

Currently, we are working towards partnering with other film festivals and cultural organizations, to be able to more widely promote our unique offering to the local and international community.
