Many indie artist launch their music career with a twitter, facebook, youtube and or myspace page. These are all great places to promote your music, however you need a home base for your business. Yes, your music career is a business and you need a home for it. All the social networks that I mentioned are great tools to promote your music, but they are just that, tools. They should not be the home for your music on the web. You need a domain name such as YourName.com or YourBandName.com
Let’s say you opened an online bike store and you built a facebook fan page to advertise, promote and sell your bikes. You built up a 5000 customer base on the social network. You never launched a web site for your bike shop because you had lots of people interacting with you on facebook, so you figured you did not need one. A couple years goes by and all of a sudden less people start coming to the social network. Your sales start getting smaller and smaller. Then you realize everyone is going to this new social network called.. myspace. Do you understand what I am saying? You can not control what happens at these social networks that you are using. Yes, they are great tools but they could get taken over by another company, the could start charging you to promote your music there. They could change the theme of the platform. That is what myspace did. Yes, it change for the better for music but what about the guy who was selling the bikes.
My point is you need a home domain. Your own web site. Then you should have an account to every social network you can find and it should link back to your home yourwebsite.com
