Oxford-trained pianist and composer Roger Proctor has completed and published his latest album, “Summit,” to resounding critical applause.
(portaltaxi.net/music) – Oxford-trained pianist and composer Roger Proctor has completed and published his latest album, “Summit,” to resounding critical applause. The record is composed of all-original tracks composed entirely by, Proctor, himself. The tracks feature his piano playing in-the-raw, which is to say, mostly unaccompanied, allowing old fans and new listeners alike to experience his precise and masterful playing without the clutter of obtrusive, extraneous instrumentation.
This collection of music is delicate and natural, warm and uplifting, moving and at the same time somehow, casual. These songs form as fine and tasteful a backdrop for a formal dinner party as they would a morning’s commute. In the manner of their composition itself, they are flawless, bearing neither ostentation nor introversion. Each piece is both a work of subtlety and of melodic genius. Proctor never plays out a theme too long, choosing instead to move on to yet another wonderful, moderately short piece, though each of them could have been enlarged upon, fugue-like, to ten minutes apiece should the composer have so desired.
A veteran listener of classical music will not immediately hear the connection, but Proctor avers, “The music on this album is contemporary classical solo piano music, although it is influenced by my work in the field of folk/rock.” His other noted influences include the auspices of Philip Glass, John Tavener, Ludovico Einaudi, and Michael Nyman.
Roger Proctor is an artist of fine education, having started violin and piano concurrently. As a boy he trained with Great Britain’s famous National Youth Orchestra. As a young man, he studied music within the legendary stone walls of Oxford University.
Regarding his inspiration for “Summit,” Proctor writes, “My melodies for solo piano capture the mood and atmosphere of mountains and open spaces. [They are] inspired by walks in the English Lake District and Swiss Alps. The album is also written to reflect the character and feelings of being a father to my 1-year-old daughter (the first track is dedicated to her).”
The album is a phenomenal success, and any fan of piano work owes it to himself or herself to experience it. All we are left wanting is a follow-up record.
